Day Trip to East Bali

We woke up around four in the morning for a day trip to eastern Bali. We started the day with sunrise at the Temple of Lempuyang Luhur, followed by the beautiful pools of Taman Tirtagangga, and decadent water palaces. Along our drive, we were surprised to learn the locals gather at markets as early as midnight and are quite lively until first light.

If you’re thinking to visit the Temple of Lempuyang Luhur, I’d recommend coming early. Even for sunrise, a small line had started to form. It was surprisingly very well organized. Talking with the locals, it’s quite empty after 3pm, but the best chances to see views of the volcano from these gates is usually in the morning as fog can roll in unexpectedly. We had a foggy morning ourselves, but it was still worth the trek. Wraps are required. Our driver brought some for us, but you can also rent a wrap at the entrance.

After the temple, we headed to Taman Tirtagangga. There’s a nice breakfast spot right in front where we ordered nasi goreng (fried rice) and watermelon juices before heading in.

The water palace was a peaceful reprieve in quiet solitude among the well manicured gardens and mirror pools.

It was quite the beautiful view at the top, extending all the way to sea. We headed back by noon for a delicious lunch prepared at the Bennu House, where we stayed.
