We drove out to the Sequoias for a weekend of snowshoeing among some of the biggest trees in the world. Like a winter wonderland, the trees at Grant Grove were decked in snow. We created our own path through the forest, hiking over five to ten feet of fresh powder in peaceful solitude created by the sanctuary of snow, trees, and sky.

We traveled through what felt like valleys, tracking location using our GPS. It was relatively quiet out here as the snow continued to fall periodically.

Along the way, we found an unexpected shelter inside an old sequoia tree where we had our lunch. It was hard not to stop and wonder at the size of the trees around us, how lucky we were to be here at that very moment.

As we approached General Grant, we took a moment to take everything in. I’ve seen the sequoias in the summer some years ago, but they’re even more beautiful and grand in winter.

It was a great day for snowshoeing with good friends, a peak of sunshine and blue skies in between. I’m sure we will be back again someday!
