Hints of Spring Around the Neighborhood
We took a slow start to our Saturday and decided to take a long walk to brunch this morning. It's been quite cold in San Francisco the last few weeks, but I was so excited to see several flowers blooming and the trees flowering along the way.
We originally thought to drop by Le Marais bakery, but ended up spending most of our time at the newly opened Cafe Reveille. It's the first time we've seen this corner so busy. There are several seats inside and under the heat lamps outdoors.
We ordered a latte to share and two shakshukas. For those who don't know:
Shakshouka (Arabic: شكشوكة, also spelled shakshuka, chakchouka) is a dish of eggs poached in a sauce of tomatoes, chili peppers, and onions, often spiced with cumin. Its present egg and vegetable-based form originated in North Africa. It is popular in the Middle East and North Africa. Cited from Wikipedia.
We first learned about this dish while sifting through recipes in Ottolenghi's book, Plenty More. It's one of our favorite dishes and fairly easy to make. There are several variations though, but that just means we have more to try in the future!
We took a quick trip to the Ferry Building Farmer's Market and picked up some fresh veggies for dinner. Given my husband's an avid fan of pomelos, we bought one for the trip home.
We spent the rest of the afternoon at home, enjoying a pot of rose scented black tea from Harney & Sons. For most people who know me, they know I'm an avid tea drinker, but what they don't know is...I just bought my very first tea pot! It's a beautiful, matte ceramic tea pot that's handmade by Sue Pryke. I bought a trio of her Mr. & Mrs. Mugs in blush, light grey, and stone. A splurge to be sure, but definitely something I'll treasure for a long time.
There's something about earthenware that adds a sense of warmth at home. One of the things that I love about Sue's work is how perfectly the ceramics are designed to intentionally fit into your hands.
Back to cozying up with a blanket and a cup of tea. Happy Saturday everyone!
